Dental Implants Bone Resorption Compromised Teeth Implants vs Bridges Benefits of Implants Clinical Success Cost Effectiveness

Generally speaking implants are more expensive initially than other forms of tooth replacement, but in the long run they're actually more cost effective because they have a much better long-term prognosis.

For example, if you lose a single tooth, the two most common methods of tooth replacement are a traditional tooth supported bridge and an implant supported crown. The ADA reports that bridges last an average of 10.1 years. Clinical studies indicate that implants are over 95% successful for 20+ years. Therefore, a conservative cost breakdown over 20-25 years would be as follows:

Tooth supported bridge

Initial cost of bridge   $3,000.00-$3,900.00
Replacement cost at 10 years $3,000.00-$3,900.00
Replacement cost at 20 years $3,000.00-$3,900.00

Total cost:  $9,000.00-$11,700.00

Implant supported crown

Implant placement $2,000.00-$3,000.00
Implant crown $1,500.00-$2,500.00

Total cost:  $3,500.00-$5,500.00

Even with partial insurance reimbursement, the cost of a tooth supported bridge is more expensive long term. In addition, each time a bridge is replaced, the teeth supporting the bridge need further preparation resulting in removal of more tooth structure and often precipitating root canal treatment and additional fees. Therefore, the total cost over 20-25 years can be significantly higher than shown above. Whereas with the implant supported crown, the adjacent teeth are not compromised, and therefore additional treatment is not necessary. It may be necessary to replace the porcelain crown, but this does not involve any additional treatment, or affect the implant or the adjacent teeth.
